David Cameron laughed at poll predictions and his party won enough seats to govern alone.

David Cameron could afford to smile after pollsters' predictions proved wrong and his party won a narrow but important overall majority.  Three leaders of rival parties resigned.

The British prime minister David Cameron could afford to smile after his Conservative party defied the pollsters to win a majority in the general election.  Nationalists virtually swept the board in Scotland.  But this raised uestions of legitimacy not only for Mr Cameron, but also for some of the opposition parties.  Three party leaders resigned.  An obstacle-strewn road lies ahead for the government, which will have to grapple with a narrow majority and the divisive issue of Europe.
