Katie Derham presents a performance of Musorgsky's Khovanshchina from Vienna State Opera conducted by Semyon Bychkov. Khovanshchina is set during the Moscow Uprising of 1682.

Katie Derham presents our Thursday Opera Matinee: Musorgsky's Khovanshchina in a performance from Vienna State Opera conducted by Semyon Bychkov. Khovanshchina is set during the Moscow Uprising of 1682, and deals with the struggle between the progressive and reactionary political factions of the time. Left unfinished at his death, several eminent Russian composers completed the score, the most commonly performed being this orchestration by Shostakovich. Then more from this week's featured orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with music by Delius.
