Radio 1 follows presenter Claira Hermet as she prepares to undergo a double mastectomy.

Radio 1 follows presenter Claira Hermet as she prepares to undergo a double mastectomy, hearing about her reasons for the operation and accompanying her to the hospital.

When Claira Hermet was just nine years old she lost her Mum to breast cancer. Then three years ago she lost her sister too. After taking a genetic test, she discovered she had an 85% life chance of getting the disease. So to significantly reduce her own risk of breast cancer she's decided to have a double mastectomy.

In this programme for Radio 1 & 1Xtra's Stories, Claira will be sharing this difficult journey with you as she prepares to say goodbye to her boobs. We follow her as she describes her initial decision to opt for surgery, meet her family and friends to discover their reaction, and go with her to hospital on the day of surgery.

Along the way she also meets women who have shared similar experiences, from Katie and her sister who have different views on whether to have a mastectomy after also testing positive for the gene, to Diane, who is currently undergoing chemo for breast cancer. By sharing these conversations and discussing their fears together they help Claira prepare for what she's going to go through, and what has become known as Double D Day.

During the making of the programme Claira has been very open about her experiences with regular appearances in the national media. As a result many of the people her story has connected with have been getting in touch with Claira and providing a source of invaluable support on her difficult journey.
