The story of five women living in isolated communities in Scotland, who are separated from their families for extended periods due to work commitments.

BBC ALBA's flagship documentary series, Trusadh, is back with another fresh and diverse range of programming coming up over the coming months. The series kicks off with Half a Life Away - a sensitive insight into a selection of contrasting families throughout Scotland, and in particular the west coast, where women in isolated communities have historically been left holding the fort for extended periods with the men working away. The Western Isles in particular have a long history of men and women working away from home and their families - on the mainland, deep sea or abroad. It's still difficult to make a living in the islands and men especially still go away - to the army, to sea, or to work off-shore in the oil industry. Half a Life Away tells the story of five such women who are separated due to different work commitments.
