Verity Sharp introduces a live concert from the Ulster Orchestra plus music from BBC NOW.

A live concert in which the Ulster Orchestra performs Grieg, a new work from Belfast composer Hammond and Stravinsky. Plus the BBC NOW in Liadov, Britten, Karl Jenkins and Wilby.

Verity Sharp introduces a week of programmes featuring recent concerts given by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. To open, a concert live from Belfast with the Ulster Orchestra. John Toal is in the Ulster Hall for music from Grieg's Lyric Suite and Stravinsky's 1945 suite from his ballet for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes - The Firebird. There's more music with Diaghilev associations with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, three tone poems by Liadov, later choreographed by Leonide Massine. Britten wrote his Sinfonia da Requiem as a pacifist during the Second World War, whilst Karl Jenkins's short choral work commemorates his uncle, who died in a Lancaster bomber over Berlin in 1944. Welsh virtuoso David Childs is the star of a recent recording with BBC NOW featuring the 'Symphonic Euphonium'. Philip Wilby's concerto allows him to display both lyricism and virtuosity, with some Greek plate smashing along the way.
