Adrian recalls the birth of his son, William, in a Leicester hospital. He had wanted a 'natural' birth, but his Nigerian wife Jo Jo wanted to be unconscious throughout. Jo Jo has since returned to Nigeria and now Adrian's mother looks after William.

On the night that Pandora is elected as an MP, Adrian has to hurry back to his parents' home to find William neglected. He moves back to Ashby-de-la-Zouche and enrols William into a nursery. Adrian immediately gets off on the wrong foot with the leader of the nursery.

Adrian is disturbed by William's tantrums. The boy has to have a coffee bean removed from his ear under general anaesthetic.
