From rowing choppy seas to reading poems on battlefields and dancing at Caribbean festivals, our correspondents indulge in remarkable freetime activities.

In Rwanda, Caroline Rigby meets a teenage female cyclist who has made it to the Youth Olympics. She is just one of many people in the country whose lives are now being changed by bicycles. 

Sally Kettle, a record-holding Atlantic rower, gets into trouble in choppy waters off the British coast. In Mumbai, Simon Atkinson watches a game of kabbadi - India's traditional and home-grown contact sport which has now been given a glamourous makeover. 

Christine Finn finds herself reading a moving wartime poem on the site of the World War One battle of the Somme in France, where a million men were killed or injured. And, we celebrate cropover in Barbados, where Carly Ester joins the festival dancers and regrets that remmants of the painful racial segregation of the past can still be felt.
