Six young singer-songwriters prepare for a historical performance. Their first songwriting challenge is to pen a tune for indie pop sensations, the Vamps.

Choirmaster Gareth Malone is back, this time with a Big Performance of historical significance. Six of the UK's most talented young singer-songwriters have been chosen to represent the nation at a World War I centenary event. All six young musicians will write a song as a tribute to mark the occasion, but only one will be chosen by Gareth for the group to perform together on the big day.

Set with the huge challenge of writing and performing a song that celebrates the memory of their ancestors, the children are stretched to their limit, and so Gareth enlists the expert help of some celebrity friends to produce masterclasses in songwriting and performing. 

The children's first songwriting challenge is a big one - in just 24 hours the kids must pen a tune for indie pop sensations the Vamps! They take a trip to Folkestone on the Big Performance bus on one of several World War I fact-finding trips. The kids are all lost for words when they read real postcards written by soldiers heading off for war in 1914. The next day a power struggle develops between the six soloists and the group starts to unravel as they rehearse their song for the Vamps. Will a bit of military team-building get things back on track, or will it all fall apart in front of their idols?
