Both Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland have given us many distinct and varied artists and bands.

The 60s first saw Van Morrison and Rory Gallagher make their names. The 70/80s brought with it Thin Lizzy and Punk / New Wavers such as Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones and The Boomtown Rats.

Meanwhile, 90s/00s bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ash, Moloko, The Thrills and Snow Patrol have all made their varied marks on the charts. Plus there's also folk-inspired artists such as The Pogues and folk rockers Damien Rice and Damien Dempsey.

Newer artists who've made a name for themselves include Duke Special, Simple Kid, Maverick Sabre and Sh*t Robot.

Oh, and there's some band called U2 who've apparently had a few hits over the years.

So expect a diverse playlist from homegrown musicians as well as artists and songs influenced by Irish music, culture and politics.
Driven by social media, the show invites listeners' Irish music-related song suggestions and comments via the hashtag #Ireland6Music on Twitter as well as through Facebook, collaborative playlists on Spotify and radio and the other usual show contact methods.
