Ten shy children who love to sing are put through their paces by choirmaster Gareth Malone. Gareth's shy singers learn a brand-new style of music - surf rock.

The Big Performance tour bus pulls up beside the seaside in Devon, but this is no holiday for Gareth's shy singers, as he wants them to learn a brand-new style of music - surf rock. Attempting to bring some Californian spirit to British shores, they must nail the complicated lyrics and harmonies of the classic Beach Boys track Surfin' USA. Although, teaching self-conscious children how to get into a chilled-out vibe may be beyond Gareth. Luckily, help is on hand from some bona fide beach boys. A local surf champion takes the whole group, including Gareth, out of their depth to hit the surf.

It'll take more than riding the waves to impress with this song though, as Gareth reveals the group will be performing at an outdoor air show to a crowd of potentially thousands. With this in mind, the pressure is on the two soloists, Sasha and Michael. They've both been bullied for their love of singing in the past. It's left Sasha so nervous of performing that she giggles and shakes uncontrollably, while Michael can't loosen up. Can they both overcome their issues and perform to their most feared audience - Sasha to her school rounders team, and Michael to some surf dudes?

It's a difficult week for everyone - the song words are complicated and Gareth is more demanding than ever. With just a month to go until their final Children in Need performance, can they deliver a word-perfect, surf-rocking show?
