Tommo regains consciousness on the battlefield where he has been buried alive by a shell explosion. Once Charlie and the others have rescued him the company shelters in an old dug-out in the middle of no-man's-land. Sgt Hanley orders the men to resume their attack, but Charlie resists on the grounds that to leave the dug-out means almost certain death. Hanley makes it clear that disobeying the order will be a court martial offence but Charlie again refuses to move, saying that he must remain in order to look after the wounded Tommo. Show less
