Honoured, feared, tamed, gawked at and eaten: the complicated relationship between humans and animals as experienced from different cultures around the world.

They are honoured, feared, tamed, gawked at and eaten. Different cultures around the world have unique and sometimes complicated relationships with animals, and our correspondents encounter them all the time, in the wild and on the plate. 

Sybil Ruscoe and Anna Magnusson visit very different animal-centric celebrations in Britain and France. Jo Fidgen heads on the high seas with Norway’s whale hunters, and Fuschia Dunlop asks why Australians don’t tend to chew on their national mascot. And one of our correspondents in India, Vineet Khare, struggles on a trip to Africa. The big problem? He is a vegetarian.
