Scotland's Voluntary Sector is worth over two billion pounds to the country's economy each year, with over 1.3 million people doing some form of voluntary work. The Highlands and Islands has more volunteers per head of population than anywhere else in Scotland.

So why do people volunteer? What drives these individuals and groups? Trusadh looks at the importance of the voluntary sector and profiles some of the many people who play vital roles in their different communities. The lifeboat men in Barra; 82 year old Chrissie in Stornoway; Seonag in Skye who cuts hair for those with mental illness; Lynne in Edinburgh who raised 650,000 pounds in four years; 'Spòrsnis' a state of the art community run Sports Centre in Ness in Lewis; and Seonag in Inverness who has her own hospital radio show.
