An EU directive states that animal species once indigenous to, but now extinct from, rural regions of Europe should be reintroduced wherever possible. It's led to a great deal of debate about what is in line for a comeback to the Scottish Highlands.

Most talked about for reintroduction is the wolf. The last one is reputed to have been killed in the same decade as Culloden. Writer Catriona Lexy Campbell detects a symbolic connection between these two events and considers whether it should return.
