This week Sportshour gauge's the difference in levels of tolerance for openly gay athletes

Jason Collins this week became the first openly gay sportsman playing in one of the big 4 US sports. We find out why he wore the 98 shirt and assess the impact the news has had.

Why did basketball’s Jason Collins wear the number 98 shirt? It was in part to honour the memory of Matthew Shepherd after he was beaten to death just for being gay in 1998.  We hear from Matthew’s father Dennis after Collins revealed the reason behind his shirt number as he became the first openly gay professional sportsman in the one of the big 4 US sports. 
 
We’ll guage the difference in levels of tolerance around the world with footballer Joanna Lohman in America and Godwyns Onwuchekwa from the group Justice for Gay Africans

139th Kentucky Fried Derby
 
Kevin Krigger could become the first black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby for over a hundred years, after black riders won 15 of the first 17 races. Jamie Nicholson is the author of "The Kentucky Derby: How the Run for the Roses Became America's Premier Sporting Event" and Ed Bowen President of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation discuss the unique place of “the greatest two minutes in sport” in the Deep South’s history.

Picture it…  Swedish top flight game between the Stockholm based team IF Brommapojkarna away at Mjallby. The IF players run out on to the pitch glancing to the left and the stand which holds their hardy support, only to be greeted by the sight of just one solitary fan of the team!  We’ll hear from former Manchester United player and current Brommapojkarna midfielder Bojan Djordjic who was inspired by this fans loyalty and YES… we have tracked that fan down. He joins us live from his Swedish summer house deep in Wallender country
