After the success of A Chorus Line, Hamlisch followed up with a show much closer to home.

After the success of A Chorus Line, Hamlisch found himself under pressure to create another hit, and with his then-partner Carole Bayer Sager, he produced They're Playing Our Song.

In a series first broadcast in 2002, David Jacobs tells the story of multi award-winning American composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch who died in August. 
In a distinguished career spanning almost 50 years, Hamlisch made musical history, scoring more than 40 movies (among other musical feats) and earning Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, Grammys and a Tony. He also received a Pulitzer Prize for the Broadway musical A Chorus Line. 
In this week's programme, Marvin Hamlisch explains how he followed the success of A Chorus Line with another Broadway musical that was inspired by the composer's own life, They're Playing Our Song.
Featuring lyricists, Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, Craig Carnelia and Carole Bayer Sager, actress Gemma Craven, author John Guare and theatre critic Howard Kissel.
