BBC launches Savile investigations. Liverpool MP calls for top cop Hillsborough suspension

The BBC launches two investigations after sex abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile. Calls for one of the country's top police officers to be suspended in Hillsborough probe.

* The Director General of the BBC, George Entwistle, has promised that two internal investigations surrounding sexual abuse claims against Jimmy Savile will be "forensic and soul-searching".

* The Labour front-bench MP, Maria Eagle, has told 5live that the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police should be suspended.  Sir Norman Bettison was a Chief Inspector with the South Yorkshire force at the time of the Hillsborough disaster, and has always denied claims that he was involved in any effort to blame Liverpool fans for causing it.

* The Defence Secretary, Philip Hammond, has suggested the row over Andrew Mitchell's outburst at officers guarding Downing Street has been "hijacked" by the Police Federation.  He says they are turning the row over what Mister Mitchell actually said to police officers into a broader issue.
