Gyles has long experience as an avid theatre goer, producer and performer. He wrote Sir John Gielgud's biography, and organised the actor's 80th birthday party featuring Superman.

At university and later he had many dealings with Sir Michael Redgrave, a generous, nervous and tragic figure. He wrote Sir John Gielgud's biography, and organised Sir John's 80th birthday party featuring Superman. And his best friend from schooldays was the Hi-De-Hi star Simon Cadell who died tragically young.
