Veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi is the new UN-Arab League envoy for Syria. The 78 year old has succeeded Kofi Annan, who resigned last month after his peace plan failed to achieve a lasting ceasefire. As a senior Arab League official in the 1980's Lakhdar Brahimi brokered an end to the Lebanese civil war. In this BBC News Special he talks to correspondent Lyse Doucet about his fears and hopes in his new role.
