We have two versions of Duke Ellington’s I Like The Sunrise from his Liberian Suite. One by Frank Sinatra and the other by Al Hibbler, both with the Ellington orchestra recorded 21 years apart. In fact, there’s a ducal theme running through the programme with another Ellington composition as part of the jazz festival which sprung up in the late fifties. There’s a Modern Jazz Quartet example of their homage to the Duke as well as offerings from Oscar Peterson, Trummy Young, Benny Carter and John Coltrane.
