Penny Gore introduces a performance of Verdi's penultimate opera, recorded recently at the Vienna State Opera. Knowing him to be a lifelong admirer of Shakespeare, it was with a proposal for a work based on Othello that Verdi's publisher finally coaxed the grand old man of Itlaian music out of retirement.. The rehearsals for the premiere at La Scala in 1887 were held in great secrecy and Verdi retained the right to cancel until the last minute. He need not have worried: the work was an instant triumph and now takes its place as one of the greatest of all operas based on a play by Shakepseare.
