Chelsea hosted a Wigan side desperate for points as they battle to avoid a relegation that many believe to be almost inevitable, whilst the Blues are hungry for victory as they scrap to secure a coveted Champions League place for next season. Liverpool, scrambling to ensure they play European football themselves after a jarring absence this year, faced unpredictable Aston Villa. 

Elsewhere, Blackburn travelled to West Brom, fellow strugglers Wolves made the short journey to Stoke, Bolton hosted Fulham, Tottenham made the trip to Sunderland and Norwich played Everton.
