Set between 1913 and 1915, it embraces a world of sex, psychoanalysis, scandal and spies, following the story of a young actor Lysander Rief, from the analysts armchair in Vienna, to the mud and trenches of the First World War and the seedy underworld of traitors in the corridors of Whitehall.
