With Southampton not in action till Sunday, when they play bitter rivals Portsmouth, West Ham have an opportunity to make an impact at the top of the Championship table when they take on Barnsley at Upton Park. The last time these two met in a league game was some fourteen years ago in the Premier League, and it was one that Barnsley would do well to forget after a six-nil scoreline in favour of the Hammers. Meanwhile, two other sides with promotion ambitions come face-to-face as Cardiff entertain Middlesbrough. Boro effectively ended any hopes Cardiff had of automatic promotion last season when a blistering first twenty minutes saw them go on to win three-nil. Cardiff, though, have made great progress under Malky Mackay and have reached the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, so it is all set up for an intriguing encounter at the Cardiff City Stadium.
