DJ Target kicks off a two-part International 1Xtra trip to Mexico, exploring the musical and cultural backdrop of Central America's greatest and arguably most troubled superpower.

Target is has been booked to DJ in Mexico City. He’s got one week to get to know the city, its people and the music first.

In part 1 Target meets the Head of EMI Latin America, Camilo Lara, and learns about Tribal Guaranchero, the Mexican equivalent to UK Funky. He compares notes between the Mexican Cumbia scene and our grime scene and finds out which UK artists are big in Latin America.

Top promoter Pedro Moctezuma explains why he thinks Mexico City is the second biggest market for live events in the world.

Target delves into the underground hip hop scene with DJ Aztek 732, DJ Gross and MCs Ximbo and El Nino. They talk about why its hard to promote hip hop in Mexico and the ingenious ways the DJs get around this to get their music to the people. 

He also visits the eastern slums and the Faro de Oriente arts centre – which provide free art classes and meals for the poorest people in Mexico City as well as dropping by The School of Rock to talk to young musicians about the reality of living in Mexico – and why they hate the idea of commercial success.
