Despatches from correspondents around the world. This week Owen Bennett-Jones presents stories from Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Azerbaijan, Brazil and the Seychelles.

Pakistan is in shock following the assassination of Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab. But his murder has not been universally condemned within the country. Some have praised the assassin Malik Mumtaz Qadri. And as Orla Guerin has been finding out, Pakistan's liberals feel under threat from a rising tide of extremism.

Mark Doyle tells a tale of two presidents in Ivory Coast, where Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara are locked in political stalemate following contested elections. 

In Azerbaijan, Jonathan Fryer finds a country brimming with renewed self-confidence after discovering a new gas field.
