In 1948 West Berlin was blockaded by the Soviets - all supplies had to be airlifted in.

When the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin in 1948, the US and its allies airlifted supplies into the city.

She struck up a friendship with one of the American pilots who flew supplies into the stricken city.
