Primary Drama: Key Stage 2 offers simple-to-use drama resources for primary school children aged 7 to 11 which are linked to popular curriculum topics. The drama sessions are intended to be easy for non-specialist teachers to use, providing opportunities to extend classroom work through the exciting possibilities offered by drama activities. Each session has a carefully balanced mix of movement, speaking and listening activities and role play. The Teachers' Notes include clear instructions for how teachers can effectively organise and deliver the drama activities in each session.

Grace's Darling's early life in the Farne Islands explored through classroom drama

Grace Darling's early life growing up in a remote lighthouse in the Farne Islands is explored through drama activities.

Grace Darling's remarkable story is related by a fictional character called Louise - a supermarket worker and member of the local RNLI lifeboat crew. Louise tells us that Grace was born in Bamburgh, Northumberland, in 1815. When she was a few months old Grace went to live on the remote Farne Islands, where her father was the lighthouse keeper. Grace and her siblings spent their time rowing, fishing and beach-combing.

When Grace was 10 the family moved to Longstone Lighthouse, an even more remote lighthouse, and it was here that Grace - aged 22 - took part in the sea rescue that made her famous.

The extraordinary story of Grace Darling and the daring sea rescue she made in 1838.

The two programmes in this unit explore a celebrated sea rescue from the Victorian era. Grace Darling was born in Bamburgh on the north east coast of England. When she was still a child she went with her family to live on a remote island in the Farne Islands, where the family operated the lighthouse. Some time later the family moved to an even more remote location at Longstone lighthouse.

In 1838 the SS Forfarshire was sailing up the east coast to Dundee when she ran into difficulty and was wrecked during a storm. Grace could see the survivors clinging to a rock and she and her father took the brave and selfless decision to attempt a rescue. Their actions became national news and Grace herself a national heroine.
