A decade after the civil war in Algeria Assignment asks if there is hope for the future.

Nearly 200,000 people were killed in clashes between Islamist extremists and the state during the devastating civil war of the 1990s. Both sides committed terrible human rights abuses. Now Algeria’s newly elected government says the country is booming. 

In this BBC Assignment programme, James Copnall travels across Algeria to find out if that is really the case, or if once again dangerous frustrations are building up. He visits the scene of one of the bloodiest massacres of the civil war, and travels to one of the areas close to where Islamist militants still operate.
