The impact of the UN's biggest peacekeeping operation, in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Hardtalk goes on the road. Stephen Sackur assesses the United Nations' peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and speaks to its military commander there.

Hardtalk takes its hard-hitting, challenging style onto the road in a series of programmes - part interview, part reportage - from one of the world's war-torn countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The programme assesses the impact of the United Nations' biggest, most expensive peacekeeping operation. Stephen Sackur travels to Goma and a remote area of North Kivu province to assess whether UN troops can really protect civilians from the region's web of warlords and armed rebels, including the Hutu militants who fled to eastern Congo after their involvement in the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

Why hasn't the UN yet delivered on the promise of extra troops for eastern Congo? How can the UN work in 'partnership' with a Congolese national army which is widely accused of human rights abuses? The UN military commander in Congo, General Babacar Gaye, responds.
