Gangster
The Story of the Burger Bar Boys
Do not use
After the riots and up until the end of the 1980s, the homeboys of Handsworth and Lozells dabbled in low-level crime. They still faced racism, but it was a new threat, gangsters from Jamaica, which saw them taking up arms. The Yardies had total control of the crack cocaine trade and were ruthless but when it came to brutality, the homeboys weren't afraid to match it. From the streets of Handsworth to the infamous Tivoli Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica, we explore how violence in Birmingham was allowed to escalate and how the sound of gunfire began to fill the city nights.
