Radio 2 Celebrates 100 Years of Hollywood

James King’s Pocket Guide to 80s Movies

Duration: 14 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio 2Latest broadcast: on BBC Radio 2

Available for 6 months

James King curates a Pocket Guide to the Movies revealing his key films from the 1980s. It was the decade which saw director Steven Spielberg becoming Mr Hollywood after releasing a stack of hit movies, including three Indiana Jones flicks and the biggest box-office hit of the decade, E.T., as well as contributing to cult classics Gremlins and The Goonies.

Science-fiction continued to be big news, with films like Back to the Future, Blade Runner, Aliens and The Terminator among the most enduring of the decade. Plus, the biggest selling soundtracks of the 80s were absolutely classics: Flashdance, Prince's Purple Rain and that immortal line of 'nobody puts baby in the corner,' followed by that lift, which, of course, comes from the number one soundtrack of the 80s: Dirty Dancing.

This series is also available as four individual podcast guides from the decades 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s on BBC Sounds. Show less
