Abortion laws in Poland were tightened in 2020 and they are now amongst the most restrictive in Europe. Abortion can only now be legally carried out in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger. Annabel Maclennan reports on how many women now feel that their lives are in danger as a result of the recent changes, and also speaks to those who support the new laws.

Earlier this year the first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, issued a formal apology to those who were tortured and excecuted under the Witchcraft Act 1563 – the majority of them women. A Bill has been proposed for the Scottish Parliament aimed at pardoning those who were historically convicted. Eileen Macdonald asks campaigners why more public recognition should be given to this dark period in the country’s history.
