One of the most popular British film stars of the 1940s, Margaret Lockwood starred in big screen classics The Lady Vanishes, The Man In Grey and The Wicked Lady.

Born in British India in 1916, she moved to England aged 4, making her stage debut at 12, and later studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

British Lion launched her film career - and she later worked with the Gainsborough film company and Rank.

She worked with directors like Carol Reed and Michael Powell, and opposite actors like Douglas Fairbanks Jnr., Michael Redgrave and James Mason.

A screen beauty, she also was popular with the public for her natural poise and unaffectedly straightforward style.

Margaret was awarded the CBE in 1981, She died aged 73 in 1990.
