David Buckland is busy with sheep and cattle in North Uist, but one of his calls is to a croft to carry out a procedure he has never done in his 40 years of being a vet. A year earlier, the gamekeeper on the local estate found a red deer calf stuck on the moor in a desperate condition. It was just days old when the gamekeeper took him home to care for him, and Bam the deer has lived with him ever since. Now that Bam is a year old, he needs to be castrated by David.

In Wick, Pete Cameron is on the go tending to lambs and calves, while in Forfar, Fiona Crowden treats an emergency case. A dog has been admitted with a fever after eating blue cheese, but it isn’t clear if that’s what is causing his severe condition.
