Kintra

A newly found personal account of WWI, a glimpse into the untold story of CS Lewis, and remembering the Covenanters in verse

Duration: 27 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio FoyleLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Ulster

A newly found recording of Belfast man Harry Currie has found its way to the Kintra team. Recorded in 1994 and never before broadcast, 97 year old Harry’s memory was a sharp as a tack as he shared his story of a very difficult day in World War 1. On a similar theme, Willie Laverty has a poignant poem inspired by the Menin Gate.
Diana Culbertson meets a young writer who is keen to keep the memory other difficult days alive; Lois Kennedy is a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church and the story she relates in verse is of the persecution of the Scottish Covenanters.
A new film about the untold story of Belfast’s C S Lewis has just been released. Helen Mark chats with Dr Sharon Jones to hear more about his faith and how his Ulster-Scots heritage influenced his life and writing.
As always, listeners are welcome to send their comments, feedback, details of an Ulster-Scots event they’d like to promote, or a good yarn to share – email the team at kintra@bbc.co.uk.
