The best of the action from Royal St George’s as the world’s elite male golfers begin their quest to win the oldest major and one of sport’s iconic trophies, the Claret Jug.

While the Americans dominate golf’s other three major championships, the Open has been won by a European or South African on nine of the past 13 occasions. Most recently, Irishman Shane Lowry triumphed by six shots at Royal Portrush on County Antrim’s north coast.
