The Story of Soul - Part Three - presented By Ace.
The last two decades has seen the solidification of the relationship between R&B and hip-hop, with the turn of the century seemingly having big soul hooks with hip-hop verses and visa versa. The sharing of these audiences, and the popularity of the music with Beyonce and Rihanna leading the mainstream charge felt very much like a Premier League footballer coming in and buying a series of star players for the larger audience. Whilst key moments such as Beyonce’s Lemonade album still showed the allegiance and respect for black culture and the plight, they used their position to focus a fearless stance which shone a light on the issues at hand.
'Music with emotion and attitude' started to gain wide traction, with the new modes of consuming music meaning that recommendations took listeners to similar styles. Many of the new acts were a breath of fresh air, with the writing style showing expression. A new zest of life came from Frank Ocean, HER, and the new wave of artists that grabbed your attention.
