Malaika and the Elephants

First broadcast: on CBBC ChannelLatest broadcast: on CBBC HD

Available for years

Malaika is a wildlife film-maker and conservationist. Growing up in India inspired her to want to save the wildlife on her doorstep. She has always been fascinated by elephants and her mission is to investigate why these beautiful animals are in such danger.

The Indian elephant is classified as endangered, and Malaika learns that the biggest threats they face are forest fragmentation and living in captivity. She goes undercover to find out more about elephants in the tourist trade in Indian cities and then visits an elephant hospital run by Wildlife SOS, a charity which rehabilitates elephants rescued from captivity. Some of the elephants here were in chains for over 50 years and now have a chance to enjoy life in the wild.

Malaika talks about the importance of being aware of wildlife tourism and encourages us to say no to exploitative elephant rides available on holiday. Show less
