The Long and the Short of Christmas

Episode 2

Duration: 25 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio UlsterLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Ulster

Instead of locking horns and trading blows over the twists and turns of Irish history, David and Tim unite to take a light-hearted but scholarly look at the history of Christmas from the birth of Jesus to modern times. Together they’ll ask some tough questions about Christmas and seek out the answers. Do we celebrate Christmas on the wrong date? Is Christmas just a Pagan festival repacked by Christians? Is Christmas Catholic or Protestant? David and Tim will quiz historians, biblical scholars, religious experts and social scientists to get to the bottom of Christmas. Along the way they discover some quirky facts, debunk some myths and, who knows, maybe even agree on a few things. In keeping with the festive mood there are a few Christmas comedy sketches.
