Jay's Jammy

Lucky Numbers, Odds and Traditions

Duration: 28 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Radio ShetlandLatest broadcast: on BBC Radio Shetland

Comedian Jay Lafferty takes us on a humorous journey with heart-warming tales of 'jamminess' alongside hilarious reflections on the psychology and statistics of luck.
Jay chats to Fred and Leslie Higgins from Aberdeen, who relive the life changing moment back in 2018 when they discovered they were the sole winners of the EuroMillions jackpot. Orcadian farmer Brian Omand recounts his amazement when one of his oldest cows gave birth to quadruplets - a one in 11 million chance. Edinburgh-based comedian Qin Wang informs Jay of the importance of lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture, and the more unusual lucky traditions surrounding Chinese New Year. Jay and author Kirstin Innes swap IVF stories and discover a surprisingly similar approach to luck throughout their pregnancies. Shetland comedian and storyteller Marjolein Robertson also tells a tale of bairns; the lucky 'Amos Bairns' of island folklore. Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire Richard Wiseman enlightens Jay on the different traits of lucky people throughout and sheds light on what we can do to become luckier people ourselves. Also featuring hilarious snippets from Jay Lafferty's acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe stand-up show 'Jammy'. Show less
