Bury: Bringing Football Back

Episode 2

Duration: 47 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC NewsLatest broadcast: on BBC News Channel HD

When Bury FC collapsed last August 2019, a group of locals made it their mission to bring football back to their town - against massive odds. Bury FC was one of the oldest clubs in English football. When it was expelled from the English Football League, it hit the town hard.

A group of fans decided to do something. They launched a new club - a team ‘by the fans, for the fans’. BBC Three followed Chris Murray and his friends for 12 months, getting amazing behind-the-scenes access to the birth of a new grassroots football club.

In the final instalment of a two-part documentary, we find the club’s supporters facing division in the Bury FC fanbase, the coronavirus pandemic and constant financial challenges. As they work to find grounds, a manager and players, they worry that there will never be football in Bury again if they fail, and that fans won’t embrace the new team if they succeed. They ask why Bury FC was expelled from the football league in the first place, and wonder which clubs will be next.

This a film about how the football family is at its strongest in difficult times, and about the power of football to bring communities together. Show less
