Behind the scenes at the UK’s most remote hospital, the Gilbert Bain in Shetland, where the team of doctors and nurses work alongside the islands’ GPs, paramedics, coastguard and the fire and rescue service to provide emergency and medical care to Shetland’s residents and offshore workers, fishermen and tourists around the clock, whatever the weather.

There are serious concerns for a baby boy who arrives in A&E feeling very unwell. The team needs to make a quick decision about whether they can help him, or whether he requires specialist care 225 miles away on the Scottish mainland. Occupational therapist Marc Beswick returns to long-term patient Summer. The four-year-old has a condition that means it’s hard for her to move her arms and legs. Marc has been working on her electric wheelchair, making modifications to make sure she can develop some independence. And Dr Lalla takes a break from A&E on a family fishing trip with nurse Thelma Irvine. Show less
