Rewind to 2004, a year that saw Scottish band Franz Ferdinand win the Mercury Music Prize for their self-titled debut album and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King win a record-equalling 11 Academy Awards. Annie Lennox wins Best Original Song for Into the West, also from the film.

The Scots Makar is appointed when Edwin Morgan becomes Scotland's first ever official national poet. Three years late, the Scottish Parliament building opens, with the Queen and Prince Philip joining a host of stars and dignitaries at the inaugural event. Violinist Nicola Benedetti leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the parliament chamber, while also that year, Benedetti won the BBC Young Musician competition.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle win promotion to the Scottish Premier League for the first time and Berti Vogts is sacked as Scotland manager after an embarrassing 1-1 draw with Moldova.

Time is called on the long-running American sitcom Friends and it’s the breakthrough year for Scots performer KT Tunstall as she makes her debut appearance on Later... with Jools Holland.
