It is a year many will associate with a story that shocked the world, the death of the Princess of Wales in a car crash in Paris at the end of August. News of her death, reaction in the days that followed, and her funeral were watched by billions around the world.

It is also a year that marked by a sea change in British politics as Labour, led by Tony Blair, have a landslide victory at the General Election. In Scotland the Conservatives lose all their seats, and the new Labour government that year introduces a referendum on whether to have a Scottish Parliament with tax varying powers; the result is a resounding Yes/Yes.

1997 is also the year that we first get to know a certain young wizard with the publication of the very first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

It’s also the year that, after 150 years of British control, Hong Kong is handed over to the Chinese. There’s a new TV channel for viewers to enjoy with the launch of Channel 5, and at the movies, Austin Powers is an International Man of Mystery.

There’s lots happening on the football field in 1997: Rangers make it nine in a row, Celtic sign Henrik Larsson and 35,000 fans line the streets of Kilmarnock to celebrate their victory over Falkirk in the Scottish Cup final.

In music, Texas score a huge hit with their White on Blonde album, Spice World is the second album by the Spice Girls and MMMbop is a global hit single for three brothers who make up the band Hanson.
