Composer of the Week: Duke Ellington

on BBC Radio 3

With Geoffrey Smith. The years after the Second World War brought mixed fortunes for Duke Ellington. He composed concert works like Deep South Suite and Tone Parallel to
Harlem and had a hit with Satin Doll.
However, some key sidemen departed, and he suffered a fall in popularity with the decline of the big bands. Then a sensational performance at the 1956 Newport Festival put him back on top.
