Schubert's Unfinished Oratorio
A performance of Schubert's incomplete oratorio Lazarus. Subtitled The Feast of the Resurrection, this work is a setting of a text by German theologian August Hermann Niemeyerwhich explores the theology of resurrection through the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Schubert set about half of the text, breaking off at a point in the second of the three acts where Lazarus is carried away for burial. The music unfolds more symphonically than in a traditional oratorio and includes some of Schubert's most personal, dramatic and adventurous inspirations. Introduced by Paul Guinery and Denis McCaldin. Schubert Lazarus (Acts 1 and 2) Netherlands Radio Chorus and Chamber
