John Barbirolli , who is conducting the BBC Orchestra this evening, has been engaged for ten weeks to take Toscanini's place as conductor of the Newà York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Barbirolli has had a brilliant career in England. Born in 1899 in London of Italian and French parents, he began his musical life as a 'cellist, making his debut at Queen's Hall in 1911. He toured Britain and Europe with the International String Quartet, and later established himself as one of our finest solo 'cellists. Then he took up conducting and appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Society, the British National Opera Company, the Covent Garden Opera. In 1933 he became conductor of the Leeds Symphony Orchestra and a year or so ago permanent conductor of the Scottish Orchestra.

Hugo Anson was born in Wellington, New Zealand, but studied at the Royal College of Music, of which he is now a professor of composition and an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Mr. Anson has already a number of compositions to his credit.
