Harold Sandler and his Viennese Octet

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

Harold Sandler, brother of Albert Sandler, the famous violinist, is by now well known to listeners, having been broadcasting for approximately eighteen months with his Viennese Octet. He is also a popular figure in many of the leading West-End hotels and restaurants, of which his characteristic gypsy and Continental music are a feature. He decided to form the Viennese Octet after spending some time on the Continent, when he was struck by the possibilities of bringing to England many of those gay and carefree tunes typical of Central Europe.
Like his brother, Harold Sandler plays the violin. His Octet consists of two violins, one viola, cello, bass, two clarinets, trumpet, and piano. The use of two clarinets enables him to obtain a vivid contrast in solos, and, together with the trumpet, a fullness which is very effective.
