The Lawn Tennis Championships
The second day play direct from the All England Club featuring The Ladies' Singles
For the second time as champion, Czech-born American Martina Navratilova has the honour to open play on the Centre Court at 2 pm. She will have her sights on a third consecutive title to match the feats of Louise Brough , Maureen Connolly and Billie Jean
King in post-war years. Her strongest contender seems likely to be the outstanding young Californian Tracy Austin , who lost to the champion in last year's semi-final, but later became the youngest US Open Champion in history at 16. There are four former champions in the field: Chris Evert Lloyd , twice a winner, has been the losing finalist to Miss Navratilova for the last two years; Evonne Cawley 's victory was back in 1971; Virginia Wade won three years ago, while Billie Jean King will be looking for her seventh singles success. By contrast another American Andrea Jaeger , just 15, competes for the first time, with a reputation tar I beyond her tender years. I News, results, summaries by HARRY CARPENTER
